In our work across Asia, we identify urgent projects that require immediate funding. We call these projects Greatest Needs, and we seek donors who are willing to commit funding for an entire project. Every six months, we update this list so that new projects can be funded and new needs can be met. We invite you to make one of these urgent needs your own.
Partner: The Asia Foundation Summary: The November 2007 cyclone that struck Bangladesh is one of the worst disasters in the country’s history, and has affected the lives of millions. As families continue to struggle following the storm, damage to the local economy is making it difficult for people to restart their businesses as farmers and craftsmen. This project brings micro-grants to recovering communities across Bangladesh and ensures transportation routes are created for farmers and craftsmen to bring their goods to local markets. Country: Bangladesh Budget: $25,000
Partner: Shaanxi Women’s Federation Summary: Domestic violence is a significant issue in China, impacting an estimated 30% of families. There are few resources in place to support women and children, who are typically its victims, and little public or even official awareness of the problem’s scope and solutions. Your support for this county-wide project will help to raise awareness of domestic violence and increase resources for vulnerable victims. This project will also serve as a model for future approaches to combat this widespread problem. Country: China Budget: $18,700
Partner: Gansu "Green Camel Bell" Environment and Development Center Summary: Like many other cities in China, Lanzhou City in Gansu Province is experiencing a massive influx of migrant families coming from rural areas for jobs and better pay. This migration is causing both social and environmental problems for Lanzhou. Educating migrant communities on how to improve their environmental impact is key to making a difference. By funding this project, you can help reach 10,000 migrants in targeted communities around Langzhou City and support the establishment of community-based environmental groups with ties to migrant schools. Country: China Budget: $11,500
Partner: The Asia Foundation & Kampuchean Action for Primary Education (KAPE) Summary: Human trafficking in Cambodia is one of the greatest dangers facing young women in rural areas. In provinces such as Kampong Cham, where these young women go to school, a large number are lured to Phnom Penh, the capital city, for higher paying jobs and find themselves working in the sex trade. This project will help all young women considering post-9th grade education receive career counseling as they leave school and safe-migration guidance. Also, 35 young women will receive scholarships for teacher-training to improve their career opportunities within local communities. Country: Cambodia Budget: $20,000
Partner: Health, Inc. Summary: Ladakh is a high altitude desert in the Himalayan region of India with a farming economy. Given its extremely isolation, people lack opportunities for economic advancement and face severe health problems such as malnutrition, anemia, stunted growth and low life expectancy. This project supports an experimental farm to test techniques for growing healthy foods. It also supports three greenhouses that will help teach farming to local children. Country: India Budget: $8,800
Partner: The Asia Foundation & the Mongolian Women's Farmers Association Summary: With high rates of domestic violence, and increasing migration from rural areas to the capital city of Ulaanbaatar, many poor and disadvantaged Mongolian women are finding themselves with few employment and economic options, often putting themselves and their children at further risk of trafficking. This project helps to train women living in the poorest districts of Ulaanbaatar to become entrepreneurs, growing their own produce, learning business skills and creating a market for their goods. Country: Mongolia Budget: $39,550
Partner: The Asia Foundation Summary: Literacy levels in Pakistan are among the lowest in Asia, and in some rural areas as few as 9% of women and girls can read. Education and literacy are starting points for communities to thrive as they struggle in the harsh environment on the Afghan border. With your help, The Asia Foundation Books for Asia program, which has been operating in Pakistan for over 50 years, will restart its successful “Box Library” program to bring 10,000 books to boys and girls in 100 schools in isolated rural areas. Country: Pakistan Budget: $30,000
Partner: Child’s Dream Summary: Chi Ko Oo is a 7-year-old boy who requires surgery for his severe heart condition, which prevents him from getting enough oxygen. He is one of thousands who have fled the civil conflict in Burma into Thailand. Many children in migrant camps along the Thai-Burmese border require surgery to survive but cannot readily access the Thai healthcare system due to their migrant status. By supporting this project you can fund critical medical procedures for at least 10 critically ill children. Country: Thailand Budget: $11,000
Partner: The Asia Foundation Summary: Mindanao has suffered from poverty and violence for decades. While sporadic violence continues, Filipino President Macapagal-Arroyo has made peace a priority and has managed to maintain a ceasefire in the region. As the region now looks toward rebuilding, it has become clear that children have been among the group that have suffered most from the conflicts. By supporting this project, you can help strengthen the schools in communities that have until now received little outside support. This step to improve local education offers an opportunity to help create a peaceful future for Mindanao. Country: Philippines Budget: $5,000
