China Earthquake Relief & Recovery

(as of July 29, 2009)
One year ago, a major earthquake struck central China with a magnitude of 7.9 centered in Wenchuan County in Sichuan Province, and was felt in Beijing and other major Asian cities.
Over 85,000 people had been confirmed dead or missing. In the aftermath of the quake, 5.5 million people have been left homeless, with 3.3 million people forced to live in tents for the coming months and even years as rebuilding takes place.
The challenges that continue to lie ahead for these survivors require significant, sustained resources for delivering education and health care, rebuilding infrastructure, and restoring local economies, in addition to ensuring basic needs are met, such as clean water and food.
Give2Asia’s work with partners and donors has resulted in $13.3 million in total committed contributions, with $11.7 million received to date and $10.9 million granted to China. These projects incurred approximately $382,000 in expenses, or approximately 3 percent of the total raised, to cover costs for research and due diligence to identify grant recipients, as well as grant facilitation and monitoring to track project activity in China.

*Details on received funds that are not yet granted: $403,875 has been raised but not yet granted. These funds are primarily donated for "advised” giving. For these grants, Give2Asia works with donors who recommend grant recipients to ensure responsible grantmaking, Give2Asia conducts due diligence on new grantee organizations, assesses new project proposals and budgets, and enters into grant agreements with recipients before the funds are transferred for projects. Funds not yet granted are currently pending donor recommendations or are awaiting submission of proposals by grantee organizations.
