Burma Cyclone Relief

Total contributions for Cyclone Relief: $270,000
(as of September 8, 2008)

The deadly cyclone that struck Burma in early May has been responsible for the deaths of at least 134,000 people. More than a million people have become homeless and there is an acute shortage of food and water. There has been widespread destruction including power and telecommunication breakdown, and the military government has made it difficult for large international aid organizations to reach those in need.

With your support, the Give2Asia Burma Cyclone Relief Fund will work with organizations with local staff in Burma working in the affected communities on programs that provide reclief programs for communities.

Projects & Partners

We are currently partnering to support the following five on-the-ground operations:

[Download the latest PDF with details on these projects]

The Metta Development Foundation, Burma - Metta field staff provided immediate relief to 49,800 families from 380 villages in eight townships of the Ayeyawaddy division. Metta continues to enable 205 Cyclone Nargis-affected communities in nine townships to re-establish community life and move toward sustainable grwoth and development for the long haul. The Give2Asia Burma Relief Fund will supplement their efforts supporting relief and recovery, food security, educaiton, health, disaster preparedness, and lifeline systems.

The Foundation for the People of Burma - FPB has been working with local community organizations in Burma since 1999.  Give2Asia is supporting FPB because of its experience working in communities in Rangoon and southern Burma and its existing partner network that is able to quickly address emergency needs. They are currently working on their Relief Rebuilding & Early Recovery plan, which will help 15 villages ranging from 40 to 150 households.

International Development Enterprises - An NGO operating in Burma since 2004, IDE is equipped with Burmese staff not hampered by language or cultural barriers in delivering aid. At the moment, IDE staff is implementing a Small Farm Recovery program, targeting 500 villages in the Irrawaddy Delta region. With your help, over 2,500 farm families will be able to re-engage in farm activities for the October 2008 -April 2009 dry season.
