Turquoise Mountain Fund
Fund Description

Turquoise Mountain was established in March 2006, with the three-fold mission of regenerating a historic commercial area of the capital, renewing Afghan traditional arts, and spurring the sustainable development of the nation’s craft industry.

Murad Khane, a multi-ethnic commercial and residential precinct in Kabul's Old City, was slated for demolition under the 1976 master plan for Kabul. When Turquoise Mountain began working there, it was a garbage-filled ruin. Through its efforts, Murad Khane is now listed as one of the 100 Most Endangered Sites of cultural heritage by the World Monuments Fund, protected by presidential decree, and the site of activities that employ nearly all the area's unemployed residents. Turquoise Mountain has cleared 5000 cubic metres of garbage from the streets, dropping them by seven feet. It is carrying out major restoration work on 5 buildings of central importance to Afghan architectural traditions, and have completed emergency repairs to over 50 homes. A literacy centre it established teaches 150 girls and boys from the neighborhood.

Turquoise Mountain has also established Afghanistan's only Centre of Traditional Afghan Arts and Architecture, where some of the country's greatest master craftsmen train students in woodwork, calligraphy, and ceramics. The Centre actively recruits women and offers classes in literacy, English, and business in addition to the craft curriculum. Turquoise Mountain's business development programme links the products of the Centre’s schools and other Afghan artisans to national and international markets.
