The Importance of Women's Empowerment-Happy International Women's Day from Give2Asia

On the eve of International Women's Day, Give2Asia would like to reiterate the importance of women's equality and empowerment. In a quote from current UN-Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, we're reminded; "Countries with more gender equality have better economic growth. Companies with more women leaders perform better. Peace agreements that include women are more durable. Parliaments with more women enact more legislation on key social issues such as health, education, anti-discrimination, and child support. The evidence is clear: equality for women means progress for all".

Tomorrow is International Women's Day and Give2Asia would like to take the opportunity to wish you all a wonderful, prosperous, just, and inclusive world to live in. There are some incredible women (and men) working at Give2Asia and our organization appreciates everyone's dedication, hard work, and willingness to work toward improving social and economic conditions for women, children, and men all across Asia.

What began as a Socialist political event known as International Working Women's Day has transformed into the more universal, International Women's Day. Every March 8th marks a day in different regions of the world where women and their roles and importance are celebrated. While different countries around the world have different forms of celebrating International Women's Day, there is the commonality of highlighting and stressing women's political, economic, cultural, and social achievements. Promoting the political and human rights issues designated by the United Nations, International Women's Day helps to contribute to the political and social awareness of the struggles of women worldwide, instigating a productive and necessary dialogue to help combat these issues.

Each year the United Nations promotes a specific theme for International Women's Day, this year being "Equality for women is progress for all". As UN Sec. General Ban Ki-moon stated, the more women are empowered and given equal opportunities, the more society can benefit from a more well-rounded and diverse approach to combating societal struggles. With the United Nation's deadline of 2015 rapidly approaching to achieve its Millennium Development Goals, the UN has stressed the importance on creating development and fighting poverty through an emphasis on female empowerment.

Give2Asia recognizes the importance of gender equality and opportunity and has a separate fund dedicated specifically for Women and Girl's empowerment. This fund provides grants to many remarkable organizations working towards improving the lives of many women and girls in Asia which will have a positive effect that will ripple throughout the community.

However, while March 8th is intended as a day meant to highlight the achievements of women worldwide, Give2Asia would also like to stress the current plight of hundreds of millions of women around the world, especially those within conflict ridden areas at the moment such as Syria, the Central African Republic, Sudan, and Myanmar. Our thoughts as always are with everyone, but we'd like to ask you to take some time to acknowledge the gravity of these current conflicts and the horrific violence and oppression an increasingly larger amount of women are facing every day.

Below are just a few Give2Asia organizations that we are very proud to work with who are all providing a much needed service within their communities to protect and provide women with as many opportunities as possible.

A New Beginning-Involved in the education, healthcare, and eradication of discrimination and violence against women and girls in the most underprivileged communities of Pakistan.

Afghan Institute of Learning- AIL is committed to bringing peace and dignity to the Afghan people as they struggle to overcome poverty, oppression, economic devastation, and injustice wrought by the last thirty years of war and sectarian violence. Approximately 70% of their funds go directly towards Afghan female empowerment.

Development and Education Programme for Daughters and Communities centre- DEPDC is a non-profit community based NGO in northern Thailand working towards the prevention and protection of the trafficking of children and women into the sex industry or other exploitative labor situations.

Give2Asia is partnered with many, many more organizations that we are also proud to work with. If there are any specific causes or organizations you might be interested in as a donor regarding women's empowerment, please let us know. If we are not already established with a program that specifically fits your desires, Give2Asia can guide you in the right direction to make a positive difference in women's and consequently, the entire community's well-being. After all, we're all in this together.
