On January 16, Pope Francis paid a surprise visit to Give2Asia grantee Tulay Ng Kabataan Foundation, Inc. (ANAK-Tnk) during his trip to the Philippines.
ANAK-Tnk has been serving the poorest children of Metro Manila since 1998, helping thousands of street children gain access to quality healthcare, nutrition, and education. Through their programs run by volunteers, ANAK-Tnk has helped rehabilitate the lives of children abandoned by their families or mentally disabled children living in the streets of Metro Manila. After mass on Friday, Pope Francis paid a visit to the Foundation, surprising 300 children who had previously been forgotten. Many of the youth in attendance had been living on the streets, involved with drugs and violence, begging for food, or prostituting themselves to survive.
“This is awesome,” said Alvin, a 10 years old program participant, “he gave me a huge warm hug!”
ANAK-Tnk had been lobbying for Pope Francis’ visit since September 2014, which makes his visit even more special for the Foundation.
