Event Recap - ONergy Brown Bag Discussion

In late March, Give2Asia hosted the co-founders of ONergy, Vinay Jaju and Ekta Kothari, for a public lunch brownbag meeting in downtown San Francisco. Guests along with members of Give2Asia board and staff participated in an interactive discussion on ONergy’s efforts in providing sustainable and renewable energy solutions to rural northeast India.

ONergy has been implementing energy-focused projects from pico to micro-grid solar panels with a focus on helping rural communities – especially farmers – be more productive with reliable access to electricity for such critical activities as irrigation. A key to the sustainability of their work since 2006 has been to also build a local network of trained service teams to help keep solar solutions in good working order, with the side benefit of also creating new local employment opportunities for these technicians.

Other current projects stem from agricultural to educational work, including community-based centralized energy solutions and lights for education, a program inspiring and teaching underserved children on the topics of English and math through computer software. Other services focus on improving livelihood and health.

Vinay and Ekta also discussed their work on ONganic, a women-led and -managed social agri-food venture that spun off from ONergy. The organization connects small marginalized farmers directly with markets for their crops - a “farm to fork” model.

It was an enlightening dialogue and we look forward to future updates from Vinay andEkta.
