SAN FRANCISCO, CA – Give2Asia, a San Francisco-based public charity, has created a disaster relief fund to begin working with local charitable entities in China following the recent earthquake in Yunnan. Since its inception in 2001, Give2Asia has responded to three natural disasters in China, funding over 80 private projects for a total of $15 million. The fund will go towards helping local Chinese organizations with proven expertise responding to natural disasters.

After the 6.5-magnitude earthquake occurred in Ludian County, Yunnan Province, China, China’s Ministry of Civil Affairs announced that 398 people were killed and 1,801 injured. Ludian County, located 277 miles north of Yunnan’s capital city Kunming, is recognized by the national government as being one of the impoverished regions in the country.  Predominantly made of wood and bricks, Nearly 80,000 homes collapsed, 124,000 were severely damaged, and 466,100 were partially damaged. Initial estimates suggest that nearly 1.1 million people were affected in all.

Based on the assessment by Give2Asia’s staff in China, there a number of needs that are being addressed by the government and local NGOs. Beyond urgent needs such as tents, foods, medical and rescue supplies, relief efforts are beginning to assess short-to-medium needs such as community services, infrastructure repairs, and psychological rehabilitation programs.

Give2Asia has already begun working with US-based entities to create relief projects with transparent and accountable entities on the ground. To learn more about the Yunnan Earthquake 2014 Fund, visit
