For more than three decades Al Njoo has built businesses in Asia, the USA and Africa, focusing primarily on energy and finance. He is the Principal of Benchmark Group, Singapore. It invests, develops, and operates oil/gas production globally. It had successful developments in Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, California-US, and Madagascar. Prior to Benchmark, Al was an energy banker at JP Morgan for many years. For over 25yrs he has been the local partner and Director at Merrill Lynch Indonesia.
Alongside his business career, Al has promoted education, impact investing and cancer research for many years. He has sponsored an innovative Impact Investment Exchange (IIX) Asia, based in Singapore, home of Asia’s first private and public platforms for Social Enterprises (SEs) to raise capital efficiently. Al served on the advisory board of UBS Bank first impact investment fund. His foundation has provided long-term funding to a scholarship program that supports Asian students engaged in PhD cancer research at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. In recent years, Al has been involved in Indonesian development efforts, sponsoring the building of new schools in Nias in Sumatra after the Asian tsunami of 2004, and working with NGO Geohazards International for preparedness against tsunamis. He has contributed funding to IRRI, the International Rice Research Institute, to develop a program targeted at increasing the productivity of Indonesian rice farmers.
