Director, Nations Petroleum; Director, Merrill Lynch Indonesia
For more than three decades Al Njoo has built businesses in Asia, the USA and Europe, focusing primarily on the energy and finance. He is a co-founder and director of Nations Petroleum, a Canadian oil and gas exploration and production group, and Merrill Lynch Indonesia.
Along side his business career, Al has promoted education, impact investing and cancer research for many years. He has sponsored an innovative Impact Investment Exchange (IIX) Asia, based in Singapore, home of Asia’s first private and public platforms for Social Enterprises (SEs) to raise capital efficiently. Al has committed to serve on the advisory board of UBS Bank’s soon to be launched US$50 million impact investment fund.
He has provided long-term funding to a scholarship program that supports Asian students engaged in PhD level cancer research at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.
In recent years, Al has been deeply involved in Indonesian development efforts, sponsoring the building of new schools in Nias in Sumatra after the Asian tsunami of 2004, and working with NGO Geohazards International to enhance preparedness against tsunamis. He has contributed funding to IRRI, the International Rice Research Institute, to develop a program targeted at increasing the productivity of Indonesian rice farmers.
